Croatia is a country which is bordering Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina and the Adriatic Sea. The total area of the country is 56.542 square kilometre and is divided into 20 counties as well as one city district in which the country’s capital Zagreb can be found. 87.8% of the population in Croatia is Roman Catholic. 4.4% are Orthodox and 1.3% Muslim.
Nearly one million people, out of the approximately population of 4.5 million in the entire country, live in the capital. Despite the fact that Croatia is relatively small, it offers as many natural and historical attractions as many larger countries in Europe. It is particularly famous for its wonderful and lush natural parks which are spread over different areas.
Additional to the popular sea coast which stretches from the south to the west of the country, Croatia also has other magnificent natural highlights on offer. The Pannonian plain and the Dinaric Alps with their mountains, hills, lakes and plains are the ultimate paradise for nature lovers and cover great parts of the rest of the country.
Up until 2001, Croatia belonged to the former Yugoslavia. Today it is an independent country which becomes more and more popular not only with tourists but also with foreigners who like to buy a second home in the sun.
